How to save an Instagram Story before it expires

A Story is live for 24 hours and then it is deleted, permanently and for everyone. That makes this a race rather than a task: if the Story matters, save it the same day. Here is how, plus the one thing to check first so you do not spend ten minutes on something that is already gone.

Updated · 4 steps · about a minute

  1. Check the Story is still live and public

Open the profile in a browser where you are logged out. If the Story appears, it can be fetched. A login wall means the account is private and nothing will work; a not-found page means the 24 hours are already up.

  2. Copy the Story link

Open the Story, tap the three dots, and choose Copy link. Highlight links work too and are copied the same way from the Highlight cover on the profile.

  3. Paste it into the Instagram downloader

Drop the link into ClipKoala. Video Stories arrive as MP4 at the quality Instagram serves, and photo Stories as full-resolution JPGs rather than the compressed preview a screenshot would give you.

  4. Save it somewhere that is not a browser tab

The file lands in your downloads. Move it somewhere deliberate straight away, because the whole reason you saved it is that the original will not exist tomorrow.

Good to know

  • Highlights do not expire, so a Story saved into a Highlight can be fetched any time
  • A screenshot loses quality and adds interface clutter; the download is the actual file
  • Once 24 hours have passed there is nothing left to fetch, by anyone or any tool

FAQ

Common questions

Can I download an Instagram Story after it expires?

No. Instagram deletes the media after 24 hours and it stops being served, so there is nothing left for any tool to fetch. Check whether it was saved into a Highlight instead.

Can I save Stories from a private account?

No. Only public Stories and Highlights can be fetched. ClipKoala never asks for your Instagram login and will not reach followers-only content.

Will the person know I saved their Story?

Instagram notifies people who has viewed a Story, which happens when you open it, exactly as it would normally. The download itself is a separate request that Instagram does not attribute to you.

Do Highlights download the same way?

Yes, and they are the safer option: Highlights stay on the profile until the owner removes them, so there is no 24-hour clock.

Ready to save your first clip?

Paste a link from any of nine platforms. Free, no sign-up, about two seconds.
